The Hound of Tarskapol

The following is the companion story to the Hound of Tarskapol exhibition design project, which can be viewed here. The story was inspired by globe-trotting mystery and espionage thrillers like Mission: Impossible, though with a darker tone.

Part I: The Battle of Tarskapol

The year is 2045...

Climate change has ravaged Europe's natural ecosystem. Floods and droughts plague the continent, specifically around the River Danube.

Austria and the Czech Republic are among the most affected, though each have developed proposals on how to mitigate these effects within their borders. However, each proposal would result in the effects on the other country worsening. Tensions rise as diplomatic talks break down, eventually culminating in the Battle of Tarskapol on August 14th.

But the battle barely begins before an array of explosions detonate throughout both nations' military camps. Thousands are killed instantly, causing both sides to temporarily stand down. Hours pass as the world reels from the devastation, and disaster relief organizations begin descending upon Tarskapol. At this point, every major media company around the globe receives a broadcast:

"TODAY THE WORLD WATCHES TARSKAPOL. REMEMBER THIS DAY, FOR IT IS MY MASTERPIECE."

No demands. No political statements. Just a chilling declaration of responsibility. Over the next few days, Interpol mobilizes, creating a joint task force between Austria and the Czech Republic to hunt down what the media has branded the Hound of Tarskapol. At the center of the task force is Swedish criminal psychologist Tilda Hägg.
